COMMUNITY CONNECTION
An integral part of student achievement is the involvement of the community in the workings of the school. There is an on-going discussion among the staff at Bester on how to work collaboratively with all stakeholders and increase their involvement.
Year 1: Educating parents and business on the changes that were taking place in the school provided many challenges. The community within the school began to learn about being a community of learners through the use of vertical teams.
Year 2: There was an increase in outreach to the parent and business community to become integral members of the Bester School Community. This was seen in the outgrowth of the Bester Boosters, PTA, and an increase in business partnerships. Weekly professional development assisted the staff in becoming a community of learners. Bester becomes a Professional Development School aligning with Frostburg University to provided teaching opportunities for student teachers.
Year 3: The focus for this year was to further education
the community on the purpose and language of the Coalition. This is
accomplished through work exhibited throughout the school, the school
and classroom newsletters, and parent meetings. There is an increase
in mentoring of students from a variety of community agencies and volunteer
organizations. Professional development continues with the community
of learners to assist them in becoming more reflective of their practice.
