Against the Current meets every other Friday from 2:30-3:30 in Mrs. Davis's room.This is a student-led group which is affiliated with Youth for Christ. It is open to all students. During our time together we take our praises and concerns to God in prayer, have a short devotion, and enjoy snacks and fellowship. Art Club – Students have the opportunity to explore artistic ideas of their own, individually or in groups. Resources are offered to guide and support students as they create. Students are also able to participate in art related opportunities within the school, community service projects, and contests. Any interested student is able to participate (limit of 30 members.) BEST (Beginning Engineering Science and Technology) uses the Engineering Design Process and household items to design, build, test, and improve student products based around a common task. Chess Club is a club for students of all grades and ability levels where students get a chance to study the game and play against each other on a weekly basis. The Cougar Chronicle is a student generated newspaper that contains information for students. Students determine the topics they are interested in and cover their selected stories. Destination Imagination is an after school club that meets to prepare for the district tournament. A small group of students work as a team to solve mind-bending instant challenges and a team challenge. Students present their solutions to the challenges at a tournament where the solutions are evaluated. Teams work on these challenges over a long period of time-usually several months. The purpose of DI is to encourage the development of creative problem solving techniques, innovation, and teamwork. Drama Club is an after-school club for any 6 th, 7 th or 8 th grade student who wants to participate in a play and learn more about acting. Each year in the fall we perform a play that is open to the public. We’ve done classic tales such as Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, and Treasure Island as well as modern comedies like Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit.

Homework Club is a program that runs from September to the end of the year, one day a week on Thursdays to help kids with homework at the Noland Center in Hagerstown. We work with the Boys and Girls club by supporting middle school curriculum. This program is coordinated by Mrs. Fletcher or Mrs. Beall. Jazz Ensemble is an “audition only” group that is offered for any musicians at Springfield who wants to further their musical ability and challenge themselves. This group rehearses after school twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3:30 and introduces students to various musical styles like Jazz, Funk, Rock, and Bossa-Nova to name a few. It’s also an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to make music and work together in a small group setting that consists of many parts and intricacies that must fit together in order for the music to sound good. Students are exposed to new rhythms, articulations, genres, and playing situations that most students do not get to experience. Math Counts is Springfield’s Math Team. In Math Counts, students focus on problem solving and competition. Meeting every Thursday until 3:30, the Math Counts Club is preparing for the regional competition on February 26 th. Springfield is hoping to return to the state competition again this year in March. National Junior Honor Society – Springfield Middle School is proud to announce the creation of a chapter for the National Junior Honor Society. The National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle school level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS.) These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
Eligible students must have attained an 85% cumulative grade point average for four consecutive marking periods, and they must have demonstrated excellence in the aforementioned areas. Potentially eligible students will receive an informational letter in the fifth marking period, suggesting they apply for consideration. Membership will be open to 6 th, 7 th and 8 th graders. An induction ceremony for the selected students will be held in May and they will be considered active members at the beginning of the following school year. Riversong is an extracurricular Show Choir for 7 th and 8 th graders. Students who wish to be a part of this group must audition and then be available for twice a week practices on Mondays and Wednesdays until 3:30, as well as various performing opportunities. Students who participate will get to sing with the best 7 th and 8 th grade singers at Springfield and perform upbeat music through singing and dancing! Robotics Club is a club that uses the Lego Mindstorms kit to complete challenge activities using problem solving skills, building skills, and programming skills. Student Government Organization objectives of Springfield are the following:
- Represent students in the exchange of ideas with school administration.
- Encourage the practice of good citizenship and to serve as an example of leadership.
- Work to improve school spirit by stimulating participation in school activities.
- Promote communication between the students and the administration.
- Improve school programs.
Currently there are 40 students enrolled in Springfield’s Student Government. In order to become a student government member, a student must maintain an 80% average in all classes. Many recently attended a County Student Government Meeting at Tech High. The officers meet once a month during first period, but possibly after school too. Yearbook - Students assist in the production, sales, and distribution of the yearbook. They organize information from the initial sale and write receipts for purchases, give input as to what they want to see in the yearbook, take pictures of events that occur, and prepare yearbooks to be handed out at the end of the school year. Students must apply and be selected to participate in this club.
