The public school systems of three counties of Western Maryland - Garrett, Allegany and Washington- will work cooperatively to advance the understanding of American History by providing content rich, historical document-based, professional development in collaboration with history and educational institutions and funded through the Teaching American History federal grant program. The “Western Maryland American History Teachers Initiative” (WMAHTI) is designed to improve student achievement in American History by improving teaching and to promote and elevate the importance of teaching and learning American history in the Western Maryland tri-county region. Each year the symposium will focus on one of three essential themes – The United States Constitution, Westward Expansion, and the struggle for justice and equality in the 20th century.
